Kind of hard to believe that we are turning 5 years old this month!!!!
What started as an idea to create space for friends prior to 2022, the inception of Naarak evolved into a platform to highlight queer API talent with our original four DJs Aspirin, Artisong, Ryan King, & Evanium, who learned how to DJ during COVID. Naarak became a medium to give new talent a start and a celebration of our community along with the creation of a home base for members locally and abroad.
It took years of being a degenerate to cultivate the network and community over the years. It started with my first gay Asian experience and gay bar The Web back in 2006 and meeting a group of gay Asians who took me in and showed me what taking care of and nurturing community means.
After moving to NYC in 2010, that same network continued expanding and grew into creating space for friends. Weijie, the founder of BOND at Baan in HK, started a gay Asian bar night from 2010 to 2012 before shutting down and the gay Asians moved to Therapy. There we dealt with overt racism and name-calling for several months before the white gays moved to Industry. With that negativity gone, Therapy became the de facto gay Asian spot over the years.
Which brings us to an incredible 5 years of creating space through Naarak. Over 80 of our biweekly parties, 68 SlurrrPs (our Wednesday K-pop party), 18 HoPas, 24 Naarak Socials, 30 summer Sunday parties, 11 collab parties with QT Nightlife, 6 Pride meetups in Central Park, 2 WorldPride DC parties, 4 Pride parties, and dozens of special collab parties with other queer Asian community organizers.
We have done a lot! And we are so grateful to you for showing up and choosing us. As the founder of Naarak my hope is that across all of our events we can be a home base for the queer api community. No matter where you’re from, you know you’ll have home with us.
